Each rug begins as a painting, sketched in our NYC studio, inspired by modern art, nature, and haute couture. Skilled artisans in Nepal then hand-knot every piece using fine Tibetan wool, silk, and mohair.

Pile heights, materials, and dimensions are all fully customizable. Every rug is a singular object, made specifically for the space it will inhabit.

How to create a Laine + Alliage rug

Commission the perfect, project-specific piece

1.

The Brainstorm

We start with your space. The palette, the light, the furniture layout, the mood you're building. Share as much as you want. The direction develops from there.

2.

The Design

I refine the composition to fit your space. Adjusting scale and proportion. Adding shapes where the room asks for them. Removing anything that competes with the furniture. Every rug is drawn specifically for the room it will live in.

3.

The Palette

Color sets the mood.  You can choose from our pom boxes, or we can dye to match a fabric or a paint chip. The palette gets refined until it's exactly right.

4.

The Strike Offs

Once the composition and colors are set, we order strike-offs from the Nepal atelier. This is where we test pile heights, loops versus cut piles, materials, and yarn heathering. Everything can be adjusted until you approve.

5.

The Rug

Once strike-offs are approved, we begin production. Lead times run 9 to 12 weeks, longer for larger pieces. Each rug is hand-knotted in a Nepal atelier, in the materials and palette developed for your project.

the UMAMI PALETTE

Îles in three neutrals. Cream. Beige. Light grey. Named for the mushrooms that share their colors: Enoki, Maitake, Oyster.

Inspired by the natural world, the Umami Palette plays with shades of grey, beige and white. Neutral in color, the hand-sketched lines carved by a looped knot are what create depth and personality. These rugs are large drawings that carry a quiet sense of artistry into the space. Silk shapes emerge where the light catches them, soft and luminous, set against the matte Tibetan wool around them.

Hand-knotted to order in Tibetan wool and silk. Fully customizable in scale, dimensions, and proportion. Available exclusively to the trade.

the SIERRA PALETTE

When developing this new rug color collection, I began by painting with colors informed by earthy tones found along Pacific beaches, pine forests, and red clay rock formations. Graphic, elegant shapes emerged through the artwork, inspired by Laine + Alliage’s classic design element: Découpage.

To translate the paintings into rugs, I worked with varied pile heights to create depth and dimension, and selected fine Tibetan wool and soft silk to enhance texture and feel. Each piece is then hand-knotted in Nepal, where the designs are carefully brought to life by skilled artisans.

Hand-knotted in Nepal.

Every rug is hand-knotted in a Nepal atelier, where master artisans translate each painting into yarn, knot by knot. A single rug can take months on the loom.

Tibetan wool, silk, and mohair are sourced locally and dyed to match the colors of the original painting. Pile heights are chosen to give each design its dimension. The final piece is hand-finished and inspected before it leaves the atelier.

Available Materials

All our rugs can be made using a variety of materials to perfectly fit our client’s projects.

Tibetan Wool

Long-staple wool from high-altitude Himalayan sheep, known for its natural lanolin content and resilience under traffic.

The traditional fiber of Nepali hand-knotted craft. Takes dye deeply and ages beautifully over decades. The surface develops character with use rather than wearing down.

Best for: residential installations, living rooms, dining rooms, hallways.
Note: moderate to high durability, natural stain resistance, decades of lifespan with proper care.

Merino Wool

Fine, short-staple wool from Merino sheep. Softer and more refined in hand than Tibetan wool, with brighter, cleaner color saturation.

The choice when a softer surface and lighter hand is called for. Reads more delicate, more considered.

Best for: bedrooms, formal sitting spaces, lower-traffic residential.
Note: softer underfoot, best in spaces where its hand can be appreciated.

Silk

A natural protein fiber harvested from silkworm cocoons. Known for its luminosity. It catches and refracts light, shifting color with the angle of view.

In our rugs, silk is typically used as a highlight within a wool ground, drawing light into specific areas of the pattern. On occasion, a rug is woven entirely in silk for a piece intended to hold full attention.

Best for: statement pieces, formal sitting spaces, bedrooms, shoe-free interiors.
Note: sensitive to moisture, highest care requirement, lowest foot-traffic rating.

Mohair

From the Angora goat. Known for its exceptional luster, with silk-like sheen and the resilience of wool.

Mohair holds dye brilliantly and softens with age. The surface catches light in a way few fibers can match. Rare, considered, and best used where its sheen can be seen.

Best for: statement spaces, formal interiors, lower-traffic residential.
Note: moderate durability, exceptional visual depth, holds color over time.

Eco-Nyl

A solution-dyed regenerated nylon developed by Aquafil, produced from recycled waste including fishing nets, industrial plastic, and reclaimed carpet fiber.

Engineered for hospitality and high-traffic environments. The construction allows us to deliver custom rugs for restaurants, hotels, and residential spaces where durability is the deciding factor.

Best for: hospitality, high-traffic residential, dining rooms, hallways, entryways.
Note: commercial-grade durability, water-resistant, easy spot-clean, closed-loop recycled.

Allo

A plant fiber from the Himalayan Giant Nettle, native to Nepal and hand-processed by local communities.

Allo brings a raw, organic texture to our hand-knotted work. Its matte surface and natural tonal variation reads closer to linen than wool. A fiber with deep ties to Nepali craft heritage.

Best for: textural statement rugs, organic aesthetics, considered residential spaces.
Note: natural fiber, takes natural dyes beautifully, unique textural character.

Silk, wool, and mohair is dyed to perfection using Swiss pigments. Aside from our curated boxes of poms, we can match any ARS your project calls for.

Knotted

In Nepal, skilled artisans tie each knot on the loom. Each rug patiently unveils itself as a work of art, as it is carefully knotted, cut and finished by hand.
